"Don't place false limits on yourself. Follow your intuition, and ignore the haters! Take risks and don't apologize for your choices. Be sure to treat yourself like a precious being, because you are one."

AGE: 54

PROFESSION: Senior Marketing Copywriter/Content Strategist/Business Owner

What is the best thing about being your age?

Two things: Perspective and Freedom. Having lived this long, I have the perspective to assess my own thoughts and actions in a far more informed and unbiased way than I did even 10 years ago. I'm less defensive, knowing that I am human like the rest of us and here to make mistakes and learn from them. I'm more empathetic to others, because I can relate to their humanity. I've forgiven myself for the mistakes I've made, and I've given myself permission to make more as I continue to evolve. All of this provides freedom -- freedom to take risks and try new things, to be wrong and move on, to change or correct corse without regret, and to love -- both myself and others -- more fully. I feel free to be genuinely me because I have the perspective of a mature woman who's lived a while.

What hardships have you endured that you feel have made you stronger?

Many! I had several knee surgeries in my 20s, which made me physically stronger. I've experienced workplace discrimination and abuse because of my gender. I've endured two divorces and a bankruptcy, and landed on my feet. I left the security of the corporate world to start a freelance consulting business, with no safety net, so that I could spend more time with my youngest daughter, who I had late in life. I managed to launch a thriving business that generated more than double the income. Consistency, faith, hard work, and the ability to focus on the positive aspects of each day paid off, and I have become much more confident in my ability to tackle any challenge.

What's your favorite thing you have checked off your bucket list?

When I was 41 I climbed Half Dome in Yosemite. I remember every detail of that hike like it was yesterday. It was a physical and mental challenge that I conquered during a particularly difficult time in my life, and when I stood on top of that rock, I felt that I could conquer anything.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Happiness is being surrounded by my family, friends and dogs. It doesn't matter where we are, what we're doing or how much money we have to spend -- just the feeling of love and belonging I get with those close to me is enough.

What is your most treasured possession?

My memories.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

My children are my greatest achievement.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I used to want to change many things about myself, but as I've aged, I've come to appreciate my quirks and perceived shortcomings as essential aspects of my being that make me unique and special. I've learned to love my freckles, my body shape and size. I no longer worry about the things I'm bad at -- I am proud of what I do well.

What is a trait you are most proud of?

Determination and resilience. And the ability to find humor in serious or unfavorable situations.

What is your greatest extravagance?

I love to take my daughter on expensive vacations to national parks, like the Grand Canyon, the Rocky Mountains, Zion and Yellowstone. I spend too much money and go into debt every time, but I wouldn't trade the memories for a million dollars!

What advice would you give your younger self?

Stop worrying about what others think of you and about pleasing others, and listen closely to your inner voice. She's trying to guide you!

What is your motto or favorite quote?

"The pen is mightier than the sword! " – Shakespeare

Words of wisdom to younger women

Don't place false limits on yourself. Follow your intuition, and ignore the haters! Take risks and don't apologize for your choices. Be sure to treat yourself like a precious being, because you are one.

Additional thoughts....

Every year, I feel a little closer to becoming the woman I was always meant to be. Aging isn't a bad thing -- it's an incredible journey towards finding your authentic self. Those of us who make it this far are the lucky ones.
