Grainne Callan
"No yourself to know yourself. Say no to the things that don't nourish or support you. Live your life for you. Learn how to be strong for yourself and others and let go of putting others down to try to feel good about yourself. Be the woman who fixes another woman's crown without telling the world it was crooked."
AGE: 57
PROFESSION: Attorney/Stand-up Comic
What is the best thing about being your age?
I'm old enough to know better and young enough to still surprise myself
What hardships have you endured that you feel have made you stronger?
Bad choices that provided important experiences for me to evolve. For example, bad career choices that ultimately led me to have my own law practice where I focus on employment law. In addition to knowing intuitively the difference between right and wrong, I know how to use the law to support my position and empower others in that knowingness as well. And almost anything can be funny with the right amount of time, tenacity, and effective wordsmithing.
What's your favorite thing you have checked off your bucket list?
Getting a bigger bucket! Runner-ups include performing stand-up, incredible travel experiences like a helicopter tour of the Matterhorn or riding an ostrich, meeting amazing people, flying first class, facing fears, and mastering the ability of "no is a complete sentence."
What is your most treasured possession?
Other than my relationships and husky, a statue a friend gave to me proclaiming me as an "Award Winning Attorney At Law" for my first "All You" winning motion. I love how surrounding ourselves with the right people can build us up and support us while we may not yet have the confidence to step into our greatness. My friend who gave me the statue passed away shortly after this but I treasure the statue as a symbol of love, support, encouragement, and empowerment.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
100% survival rate for everything life has thrown at me so far. Runner-ups include graduating law school at 50 and passing the CA bar at 51, and performing live stand-up.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Be more loving and kind towards my body.
What is a trait you are most proud of?
My sense of humor and ability to make others laugh.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Your voice is important and have the confidence to speak your truth. Do not try to make yourself smaller so small people can feel more comfortable. Pursue your own callings, not the goals of others. The more you learn your voice, the decisions along the way get easier to make.
What is your motto or favorite quote?
"Not my circus, not my monkeys."
Runner-ups: "Everything will be alright in the end so if it is not alright it is not the end." Or "Do what you can, when you can, how you can, and everyone else can bugger off."
Words of wisdom to younger women…
No yourself to know yourself. Say no to the things that don't nourish or support you. Live your life for you. We don't all have to do/be/say the same thing. You can disagree with others while still wanting the highest and best outcome for them. Learn how to be strong for yourself and others and let go of putting others down to try to feel good about yourself. Be the woman who fixes another woman's crown without telling the world it was crooked.
Additional thoughts...
It's better than the alternative! Age is a matter of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter. Every now and then I enjoy looking back and seeing how I've evolved and how every experience has made me me.
