"Don’t let anyone or anything decide or determine your worth. You are here for a reason and you are God’s masterpiece. Comparison is the
thief of joy."
AGE: 52
PROFESSION: Elementary School Teacher
What is the best thing about being your age?
Being 52 has given me experience and lessons in handling life’s curveballs.
What hardships have you endured that you feel have made you stronger?
I was never able to get pregnant even though my husband and I tried for years. However, it’s taken me a long time to realize that you don’t need to give birth to a baby to be a “mother” to someone. I am a mother in my own way to my students, my friends, and some family members.
What's your favorite thing you have checked off your bucket list?
I completed 3 half-marathons in my 40’s, which is still surprising to me for a girl who has difficulties walking without tripping over her own feet.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
My idea of perfect happiness is feeling valued; knowing that I have so much to be thankful for, and feeling at peace with who I am and who I’ve grown up to be.
What is a trait you are most proud of?
My compassion and sensitivity have allowed me to become the best teacher and friend I can be.
What is your most treasured possession?
My dog because she has always been there in good times and bad. She is accepting and is always happy to see me, and provides comfort when I need it.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Completing my master’s degree in under two years, while full time teaching and finishing it during a pandemic, on April 1, 2020.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I wouldn’t change a thing, honestly. I am a child of God and if He wanted me to be different, He would have made me that way. I am His creation and I am here to serve His purpose for me. It’s taken me awhile to accept that about me, but I am who I am, and I wouldn’t change a thing, and those who know me and love me, accept me for who I am as well, flaws and all.
What is your greatest extravagance?
My greatest extravagance is my home! I actually felt like a grown-up when my husband and I bought our first home. It’s truly our place, and we’ve been able to fill it with so many amazing memories.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Remember where you came from. You are a child of God. God will lead you to the right people. You are loved beyond measure.
What is your motto or favorite quote?
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (Phil. 4:13)
Words of wisdom to younger women
Don’t let anyone or anything decide or determine your worth. You are here for a reason and you are God’s masterpiece. Comparison is the thief of joy.
Additional thoughts...
I used to dread getting older but now I see it as a gift that some people never get to experience. We all get one life, so it’s up to us to make it what we want our lives to be.
